Wild cherry (Prunus serotina) is a fast-growing deciduous tree, 18-27 m tall, with a dense, regular oval crown. The trunk is long and straight. The bark of young trees is smooth. The branches are pendulous, thin, reddish-brown. The leaves are alternate, simple, 6-14 cm long, oval or lanceolate. The flowers are about 8 mm in diameter, white, hanging, scented, collected in a raceme 6-15 cm long. The fruit is a round, red-purple drupe about 1 cm in diameter, almost black when ripe. It prefers deep, moist and fertile soils.
